A mature male Protomelas taeniolatus can reach around 15–19 cm and develop an extraordinary mix of red, orange, and metallic blue. The fish sold as Red Empress, Super Red Empress, Fire Blue, or Spindle Hap is also more complicated than its trade name suggests. In practice, the locality matters. Different Lake Malawi populations can look…
Lake Malawi is famous for rock-dwelling Mbuna, but the open-water column holds some of the most spectacular cichlids in African freshwater systems. Copadichromis chrysonotus stands out even among those pelagic species. Known naturally as a true Utaka, this cichlid abandons the constant rock scraping seen in typical Malawi setups and trades it for fluid, mid-water…
Copadichromis borleyi is named for the fins of its plainest fish: the red fins in the common name belong to females and juveniles, while adult males turn yellow or orange with a blue head. In practice, that color split and the strong local variation across Lake Malawi explain why one species shows up in shops…
Recommended tank sizes for the blue dolphin cichlid range from about 180 liters to 700 liters, and the gap says more about how buyers underestimate this fish than about any real disagreement. In practice, a small juvenile from a shop grows into a 20 cm adult that one source says can reach 30 cm when…
The flavescent peacock is sold under a dozen different names, and its color runs from blue to yellow to red depending on which part of Lake Malawi the population comes from. In practice, several forms that hobbyists once treated as separate species now sit inside Aulonocara stuartgranti, and one of them, the Maleri form, is…
The sunshine peacock is one of the most popular yellow cichlids in the hobby, and it is rated Critically Endangered in the wild. In practice, both statements hold at once: the fish is bred in large numbers in captivity, while its only recorded wild population, on a single Lake Malawi reef, has been hit hard…
