Comet goldfish get sold under the wrong name constantly, and the reason is simple: a bright orange common goldfish looks close enough to a comet at a glance that shops and buyers mix them up all the time. In practice, the three single-tail goldfish types covered here share a basic body plan but differ in…
Fancy goldfish types can look so different from each other that new keepers often assume they’re looking at entirely unrelated fish. In practice, every one of these varieties traces back to the same species, Carassius auratus, shaped over centuries of selective breeding in China and Japan. This guide breaks down the major types actually worth…
“Algae control” gets used as a catch-all term for three genuinely different problems: algae actually growing on glass and decor, cloudy water that has nothing to do with algae, and a disease outbreak like ich that people sometimes confuse with a water quality issue. Treating the wrong problem with the wrong product wastes money at…
Filtration and aeration solve two different problems, even though beginners often lump them into one “equipment” purchase. A filter processes waste, mechanically, chemically, and biologically. An air pump moves oxygen into the water and helps push off dissolved CO2. A tank can run a filter with no air pump at all and be fine; it…
Fish mouths tell you almost everything about how to feed them. A fish with an upward-tilted mouth evolved to intercept food at the surface. A fish with a flat belly and a downward-facing mouth evolved to pick through the substrate. Feed both the same floating flake and one of them eats well while the other…
Clear water lies. A tank can look perfectly fine and still be carrying an ammonia spike that’s actively damaging your fish’s gills. Testing is the only way to actually know what’s in the water, and it’s the single habit that separates aquarists who catch problems early from the ones who only find out something’s wrong…
