Question 1

How big should my first aquarium be?

Accepted Answer

Aim for at least 10-20 gallons. Larger volumes dilute toxins faster and give you more room for error while you're learning.

Question 2

Is glass or acrylic better for a first aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Glass is generally the better choice for beginners. It resists scratches better and costs less, even though it's heavier than acrylic.

Question 3

Should a beginner start with a freshwater or saltwater aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Freshwater is the better starting point. Saltwater tanks require more equipment, more precise water parameters, and a longer learning curve.

Question 4

How long does it take to cycle a new aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Most tanks take 4 to 6 weeks to fully cycle before it's safe to add fish.

Question 5

Can I add fish to my aquarium right away?

Accepted Answer

No. Adding fish before the nitrogen cycle finishes exposes them to toxic ammonia and nitrite levels.

Question 6

What equipment do I need for my first aquarium?

Accepted Answer

At minimum, you'll need a filter, heater, lighting, substrate, and a water conditioner to treat tap water.

Question 7

What are the best fish for a first aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Bettas, guppies, neon tetras, and corydoras catfish are all hardy choices that tolerate beginner mistakes well.

Question 8

Where should I place my first aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Choose a low-traffic spot away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and air conditioning drafts.

Question 9

What is the biggest mistake first-time aquarium owners make?

Accepted Answer

Adding fish before the tank finishes cycling. It's the leading cause of early fish loss in new aquariums.
