Question 1

How many pygmy corydoras should be kept together?

Accepted Answer

Keep at least six pygmy corydoras together. A group of eight to twelve or more is a useful target when the aquarium has sufficient space and filtration. Larger groups often display more natural schooling behavior.

Question 2

What size tank do pygmy corydoras need?

Accepted Answer

A 10-gallon aquarium can work for a suitable group, but a longer 15-gallon or larger aquarium offers additional space and flexibility. Prioritize a suitable footprint, stable water, and enough room for the fish to swim together.

Question 3

What temperature do pygmy corydoras need?

Accepted Answer

A practical temperature range is 72–79°F (22–26°C). Maintain a stable temperature that also suits the other fish in the aquarium.

Question 4

What do pygmy corydoras eat?

Accepted Answer

They eat small omnivorous foods, including nano sinking pellets, finely crushed flakes, daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp. Food must be small enough for their mouths, and feeding should be monitored to prevent competition.

Question 5

Can pygmy corydoras live with shrimp?

Accepted Answer

They can generally share an aquarium with adult dwarf shrimp. However, very small shrimplets may occasionally be eaten while the fish forage. Dense moss and plant cover can give young shrimp more places to hide.

Question 6

Are pygmy corydoras good for beginners?

Accepted Answer

They can be suitable for beginners who understand aquarium cycling, water testing, group size, and feeding requirements. They are best kept in a mature, stable aquarium with peaceful tank mates rather than in a newly filled tank.

Question 7

Do pygmy corydoras stay on the bottom?

Accepted Answer

No. Unlike many larger corydoras, pygmy corydoras frequently swim in the middle of the water column as well as forage near the bottom. Their midwater schooling behavior is one of their distinctive characteristics.

Question 8

Do pygmy corydoras eat algae?

Accepted Answer

They may consume small organic particles and tiny food items while foraging, but they should not be treated as algae-eating cleanup fish. Provide a balanced diet of appropriately sized foods and maintain the aquarium through regular cleaning and water changes.
