Question 1

What is the difference between ocellaris and percula clownfish?

Accepted Answer

Ocellaris have thinner black outlining around their white bars and run slightly larger, while true perculas have thicker black edging and are generally a bit more aggressive. Care requirements are nearly identical between the two.

Question 2

Do ocellaris clownfish need an anemone?

Accepted Answer

No. They'll happily host in a rock, coral, or corner of the tank instead. An anemone is optional and comes with its own separate care requirements worth researching independently.

Question 3

Are Black Ice, Snowflake, and Storm clownfish different species?

Accepted Answer

No. Every named morph is still Amphiprion ocellaris. These are selectively bred color and pattern variations, not separate species, and they all share identical care requirements.

Question 4

How many ocellaris clownfish should I keep together?

Accepted Answer

Two. Add them together as juveniles and they'll typically form a natural pair, with the more dominant fish becoming female as they mature.

Question 5

What does "misbar" mean in clownfish?

Accepted Answer

It refers to one or more of the three white bars being incomplete or missing. It's a naturally occurring trait that can show up across nearly any color line, not a separate designer strain.

Question 6

What size tank does an ocellaris clownfish need?

Accepted Answer

A single fish or bonded pair does fine in a tank as small as 15 gallons, though a larger tank gives you more flexibility for adding tankmates down the road.

Question 7

Can I keep two different clownfish species together?

Accepted Answer

It's best avoided. Clownfish of different species, even generally peaceful ones, will often fight. Stick to a single species per tank, though you can mix color morphs within that species without issue.

Question 8

How do clownfish change sex?

Accepted Answer

All ocellaris are born male. The most dominant fish in a group transitions into a female as it matures, and this change is permanent. If the female is lost, the breeding male becomes female, and the next most dominant fish steps up to breeding male.

Question 9

Are ocellaris clownfish reef safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. They coexist well with soft, LPS, and SPS coral. They may occasionally host a coral colony in place of an anemone, which can cause mild irritation to that specific piece over time, but they don't pose a broader threat to a reef tank.

Question 10

Why does designer ocellaris cost more than standard orange ones?

Accepted Answer

Designer morphs take multiple generations of selective breeding to establish and stabilize a specific pattern, and breeders invest significant time achieving consistent results. That development cost, plus genuine rarity for some patterns, is reflected in the price.
