Question 1

Can Azolla live in an aquarium without a filter?

Accepted Answer

Azolla itself does not require a filter to remain afloat, but whether an aquarium can safely operate without filtration depends on the fish, stocking level, feeding, and overall biological stability. Do not remove essential filtration just to accommodate the plant.

Question 2

Does Azolla need to be planted?

Accepted Answer

No. Azolla is a floating fern. Leave it on the water surface rather than burying it in sand or gravel.

Question 3

Why is my Azolla staying green instead of turning red?

Accepted Answer

Colour depends on species and growing conditions, including light and temperature. Green fronds are not automatically unhealthy, and colour alone should not be used to diagnose a problem.

Question 4

Can Azolla cover the whole aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Yes, under favourable conditions it can spread across much of the surface. Thin it regularly and maintain open areas for light and fish access.

Question 5

Is Azolla safe to release into a pond?

Accepted Answer

No. Do not release aquarium plants into natural waterways. Some Azolla species are invasive or legally restricted, and even a small amount of plant material may establish a new population.
