Question 1

Does Vallisneria need CO₂?

Accepted Answer

Most commonly kept aquarium varieties grow without injected CO₂. Suitable lighting, stable conditions, and adequate nutrition are usually enough for a healthy low-tech setup.

Question 2

Can Vallisneria grow in sand?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sand can support Vallisneria when the roots can establish and nutrients are available. If the sand is nutrient-poor, a root-zone fertilizer may help.

Question 3

How do I stop Vallisneria from spreading?

Accepted Answer

Inspect the substrate for runners and remove unwanted daughter plants. Regular thinning keeps the colony within its intended area.

Question 4

Should I cut the tips off Vallisneria leaves?

Accepted Answer

Avoid trimming healthy leaves across the tips. The cut edges may brown and look untidy. Remove damaged leaves at their base instead.

Question 5

Will Seachem Flourish Excel kill Vallisneria?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Seachem reports that normal maintenance dosing was generally tolerated in its tests, while larger doses sometimes caused temporary leaf melting. Follow the label and do not overdose.

Question 6

Why is my Vallisneria melting after planting?

Accepted Answer

Some plants are grown out of water and lose older leaves while adapting to submerged growth. Keep the crown intact, remove badly damaged leaves, and allow time for new growth if the roots remain healthy.
