Question 1

How do I know if my frog is male or female?

Accepted Answer

Males are generally smaller, develop nuptial pads on their thumbs during breeding season, and vocalize actively. Females are larger, heavier, and rounder when carrying eggs. Some species require experienced handling or even ultrasound to confirm sex definitively.

Question 2

How do frogs mate in captivity?

Accepted Answer

The male climbs onto the female’s back and grips her in amplexus, a position that allows him to fertilize the eggs externally as she releases them. In captivity, this behavior is triggered by environmental cues such as a rain chamber, temperature shifts, or increased humidity.

Question 3

How do frogs reproduce without a rain chamber?

Accepted Answer

Some species, particularly fire-bellied toads and White’s tree frogs, will breed with just a simple cooling and warming cycle and increased misting. A rain chamber is most critical for species like dart frogs and certain tree frog species that require strong rainfall simulation.

Question 4

How long does it take for tadpoles to become frogs?

Accepted Answer

Metamorphosis typically takes 6 to 14 weeks, depending on species, water temperature, and feeding frequency. Warmer water and regular feeding accelerate the process. Dart frogs can take up to 16 weeks, while White’s tree frogs often complete metamorphosis in as little as 5 to 6 weeks.

Question 5

What do I feed newly metamorphosed froglets?

Accepted Answer

Start with flightless fruit flies dusted with calcium and D3 powder. As froglets grow, graduate to pinhead crickets and small waxworms. Feed daily and remove any uneaten prey after 15 minutes.

Question 6

Can I use tap water for my breeding setup?

Accepted Answer

Never use untreated tap water. Chlorine and chloramine in tap water are lethal to eggs and tadpoles. Use a dechlorinator, aged water, or reverse osmosis water. Rainwater is also suitable if collected cleanly.

Question 7

Why are my frogs not breeding even after conditioning?

Accepted Answer

The most common reasons are incorrect sexing (both animals may be the same sex), insufficient conditioning period, inadequate rain chamber simulation, or animals that are not yet sexually mature. Review each factor systematically before making changes.

Question 8

How many eggs do frogs lay?

Accepted Answer

This varies enormously by species. American bullfrogs lay up to 25,000 eggs per clutch. White’s tree frogs lay 150 to 300 eggs. Dart frogs lay just 2 to 8 eggs at a time but do so frequently throughout the breeding season.

Question 9

Do I need to separate the tadpoles from the froglets?

Accepted Answer

Yes. As froglets begin emerging from the water, move them to a separate grow-out enclosure immediately. Larger tadpoles will eat smaller ones, and adult frogs will eat froglets without hesitation.

Question 10

How long do frogs live in captivity?

Accepted Answer

With proper care, most pet frog species live well beyond their wild counterparts. White’s tree frogs regularly reach 15 to 20 years. Pacman frogs live 10 to 15 years. Even smaller species like American green tree frogs can live 6 to 10 years with a clean, stable environment and a balanced diet.
